LADE participates in 4th Annual Conference of The Arab Association for the Study of Diabetes (AASD), 18-20 November 2009, Cairo, Egypt

Dr Issam Hajjaj, Chair of the Board and Dr. Salem Beshyah, Honorary Treasurer of the Libyan Association for Diabetes and Endocrinology were amongst the distinguished guests of the Arab Association for the Study of Diabetes and Metabolism during its 4^th Annual Conference held in Cairo Sheraton between 18^th and 20^th November 2009. LADE was invited before to attend the 3^rd AASD annual Conference and a Special Joint AASD and SMEDIAN in Morocco but unfortunately none of the board members could make it.

The meeting was attended by over 1500 delegates with speakers from Egypt, the Arab world and Greece, USA, Germany and UK. Dr Hajjaji was invited to deliver an opening commentary in the opening ceremony on behalf of the Libyan Association dor Diabetes and Endocrinology. spoke about Diabetes in Libya and Dr. Beshyah gave an overview of Diabetes in the Arab World: Current Status and Future Challenges. Two other LADE members who happened to be in Cairo attended (Dr. Adela Elmami from Benghazi and Dr. Khalid Ali from Sirt). Indeed Dr. Elammami submitted a last minute abstract and was included in the programme. She presented her audit of the outcome of ICU patients as related to diabetes and steroid therapy.

Many of the Arab Associations of Diabetes and Endocrinology are considering the formation of a federation or a union to coordinate their activities. LADE pledged to support the move and play an active role.
