EXTRACTS FROM THE REPORT ON
THE SIXTH LIBYAN DIABETES AND ENDOCRINOLOGY CONFERENCE SUMITTED TO THE BOARD,
LADE.
Dr Salem Beshyah, PhD FRCP
Senior Consultant
Endocrinologist, SKMC, Abu Dhabi, UAE. Chair, Scientific Committee, LDEC
Planning Period: Was fairly
short, we have finally agreed to hold the meeting for this year, early in
January 2008, a draft proposal was sent
out and during January 2008, conduct of the and an outline potential
participants committed themselves. As usual, Issam and the local organizing
started negotiating the local arrangements by committing the sponsors and the
appointing the organizing company and by looking at the potential venue.
Conference Style/Format: The
style and format of the LDEC2008 was a natural outcome of the modifications
that were progressively introduced since LDEC2006 through LDEC2007. LDEC2006
had no interactive sessions other than the additional the additional session of
Mohsen Eledrisi on day 3. LDEC2007 had both interactive sessions and the
“lecture-type workshops in the afternoon” (as I was personally apprehensive on
the possibility of conducting truly interactive sessions and by people
refraining from delivering a lecture; there were people who did not even
understand what an interactive session and simply was preparing a lecture). By
popular demand we removed the afternoon lecture-type workshops and limited the
afternoons to interactive sessions cutting the length of the program by 2
hours. I would suggest that in the next year even the oral communications
session are done in parallel during the second half of a symposium in the
morning after coffee on day 2 am. Abstracts books are all out before end of the
conference. Amna and I introduced a new term to Libyan Journal of Medicine
“Supplement Guest Editors”. To save money and time we simply asked people to
print their own copy on their way to the conference.
Time keeping:
Was very good. Indeed it was EXELLENT by MENA standards.
Scientific Content:
Sessions: Delivered sessions included 10 plenary
lectures 11 symposium sessions, 7 oral communications, 13 posters, 15 interactive
sessions (run for one time at least), Cancellations and replacements: two 20
minute sessions were cancelled and other speakers expanded into them. Al-Fituri
Medal lecturer and subject was replaced.
Faculty: More than 40
speakers, chairs and moderators were involved including 18 speakers for the
lectures and symposia and the remainder took care of the interactive sessions.
The high scientific level of the presentations was appreciated by the many of
the delegates. Some colleagues objected on the choices of the speakers etc. As
a small group we ought to try and attract good speakers from within and from
outside the group. It is not necessary for every body to contribute by a
lecture or a major contribution.
Attendance:
A record attendance was observed this year which was well over the more than
last year, over 240 meals served at lunch daily. Last years’ attendance was
much less than this. We had more people from outside Tripoli (Benghazi, Derna, Musrata, Homs, Zawia etc) than before and
even wider representation from general hospital such as Elkhadra
and Maeitigha, Tajura, Aljala, Trauma Hospitals. People seem to have had a nice
time interacting together. Some indicated that the program was too long,
anything less than what we had would be “comical” meeting. I think keeping the
variety of presentations make it different from the “Course”. Programme books
were available at registration, nearly 360 folders were picked. The Dossiers
looked smart and reusable and only costed 10% of the
cost of bags (25 LD down to LD 2.5). I think we should stick to folders for the
future and never consider the bags again. Many meetings which are bigger than
ours and of more established Associations are doing the same.
Delegates:
Mostly from target audience, there are others who were wondering in and
out. Being too strict will just chase
away delegates if we are to impose registration fees and/or more strict
registration criteria.
Other
Organizational and Specific logistic Reflection Points:
1.
High profile opening by the minister and LBMS chief, local and national radio
and TV over the three days.
2.
The venue is OK overall, though day 3 hotter outside. Other
facilities, WC’s OK, enough space inside and outside to relax and Gossip
in private, just to wonder around posters and prepare for future sessions etc.
3.
In general the food slightly too much, but people are expecting this level of
hospitality i.e. measured against “Libyan Wedding Party Standards”, otherwise,
people will go home for “Lunch” and the afternoon sessions will be deserted.
Mid morning snack involved other stuff than “finger” food that delayed the
process so we need to be specific . Therefore, I will
still strongly support coffee, tea and cold drinks at mid morning break and
with a limited choices of croissant, danish and
mini-sandwich, bread but not cheese, olives, jam, honey etc for the sake of
time keeping. Lunch is reasonably substantial being a main meal. Unless we look
after people, we will fail to have an audience which is the main measure of success.
